1. bethel in ny suspect high level apostate, cant identify it but know its there.

2. major organizational changes about to start rolling out, one is changes to the "service committee" and titles, po to be done away with, thats all i know for now.

was told that if you are the sort of person that cant handle changes, you wont stay in the org for long.

hi everyone, i have been a longtime lurker to this website, but i have never posted.

so here is a little bit about myself:

i was raised a jw, got baptized at 13, became a regular pioneering right out of high school, i was used extensively at the hall and on assemblies, came from a nice jw background.

here is an interesting challenge for the folks.

this thread revolves around one subject, and that is thomas paine's brilliant critique of the bible written in about 1795. he did most of this from memory, while in prison in france.. http://www.infidels.org/library/historical/thomas_paine/age_of_reason/.

Two Full Time Jobs or A Balanced Family Life

geesh - i didn't think anything could top bush's ridiculous, moronic, arrogant comment about how lucky americans were that they could work 3 jobs...i'd really like to see him do the one he has without taking months off on vacation, but hey, never going to happen.

right now the government is trying to figure out a way to make the recession a short one and here's a wonderful quote from 2 of the republicans - ...i cannot wait for the elections to come.

topping congresss agenda as it returns this week is a plan to jump-start the economy and try to shorten the slowdown that many economists say has already begun to take hold.

3-income household here, 3 people working sh#t jobs, one with a college degree, 2 cars, one dead, one car about to die, no life insurance, no health insurance, work, work, work.

Night shift, day shift, sh#t work, sh#t life, sh#t economy.

Can sh#t be jump-started?

I heard a commentary on NPR the other day saying you can jump start a dead frog's leg, and a heart patient . . . oh well . . . good luck with that . . . sh#t!

Does Debating Have to Be Abusive - To Be Effective ?

my wife and i were having an interesting discussion about some of the debates that take place on the board here .

now, granted most people , i feel upwards of 90 % on the board maybe higher try to be respectful in their debates or discussions on topics.

i think we all had enough bashing in the witness organization.

Does debating have to be abusive to be effective?

No.

Does the person who yells the loudest win? Not necessarily.

But the media is about entertainment, (as you mentioned), and much "entertainment" is abusive, attention-getting, and loud, in more ways than one. In that context, "winning" involves who gets the highest ratings - often received from an under-aged crowd, or people who have been developmentally disabled by constant addiction to entertainment, violent video gaming, and inattention to the proprietary details of real day-to-day human interactions.

There may also be a lack of good role-models for proper debating.

I guess the only solution is to attempt to be good role models ourselves. Stopping drinking has helped me a lot in that regard. I wonder if there are others here who have learned to tone down their aggression, or who have recognized it and want to change their approach.

It would be interesting to participate in a support group geared toward more civility in debating, both online and in general. I find that my own approach tends to be much more genial in person than it is online. I have to work to avoid being aggressive when I come across arguments that are vapid, ignorant, stupid, and/or mean-spirited. It is a challenge, I suspect, for most people not to "return evil for evil."

Learning to function non-abusively is just part of growing up and most of us could use a little help with it now and then, and some of us need those gentle reminders about civility more often than not.
